How a battery earns in Mexico

A battery earns by charging when the day-ahead market (MDA) is cheap and discharging into the evening peak. In Mexico that market is run by CENACE inside the Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM), where the state utility CFE remains dominant and older thermal plants are dispatched ahead of cheaper renewables. Renewables were about 22% of generation in 2024, so scarce transmission leaves solar and wind exposed to curtailment — exactly the volatility a storage asset monetizes. New 2025–2026 rules let standalone BESS above 0.7 MW hold a storage permit and offer capacity when duration is 3 hours or more, and the PLADESE plan targets roughly 6 GW of batteries by 2030. Live MX$/MWh day-ahead prices for Mexico are being integrated; the arbitrage spread shown here will follow once that feed is connected.
