How a battery earns in Brazil

Brazil runs a hydro-dominated, historically regulated power market where the operator ONS optimizes hydrothermal dispatch and the CCEE settles the spot price known as the PLD. Since January 2021 the PLD has been calculated hourly (PLD horário) via the DESSEM model for each of the four submarkets — North, Northeast, South and Southeast/Center-West. That structure keeps price swings shallower than in liberalized markets: over the last 30 days the day-ahead spread in the Southeast/Center-West submarket averaged about R$122/MWh, roughly 70% of the average price. Yet a growing arbitrage window is opening as solar and wind curtailment reached 20.6% of output in 2025, pushing cheap midday energy that a battery can absorb and release into the evening peak.
