The day-ahead market is the most important wholesale electricity market in Europe. Here, electricity prices for the next day are determined one day in advance.
How Does the Day-Ahead Market Work?
- Until 12:00: Buyers and sellers submit bids
- At 12:42: The exchange (EPEX SPOT) publishes prices
- Result: 24 hourly prices for the next day
Day-Ahead vs. Intraday
| Feature | Day-Ahead | Intraday |
|---|---|---|
| When | 1 day before | Up to 5 min before delivery |
| Pricing | Auction (12:00) | Continuous |
| Liquidity | Very high | Medium |
| Volatility | Moderate | High |
Why Are Day-Ahead Prices Important?
Day-ahead prices form the basis for dynamic electricity tariffs. If you have such a tariff, you pay (plus surcharges) the day-ahead price for each hour.
